Heart Attack

Heart Attack

ECO

I awoke at midnight, in a state of panic. It felt as if my heart was stopping. It felt as if my heart were being destroyed and regenerated from the inside of my body. It didn’t hurt, but it was incredibly unpleasant.

And then, I noticed the clock.

Tick.

Tock.

Tick.

Tock.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

Tock.

The sounds… they were out-of-order. Their cadence was wrong. It sped up, then slowed down repeatedly. It was disconcerting, and creepy.

And it only lasted for about 30 seconds. Then, it was silent - along with my heart. I was fine. I wasn’t even scared.

When I awoke in the morning, I looked for this clock, but it was nowhere to be found.

It was then that I remembered that both The Agent and The Lion used the mobile app, “TikTok.” Checking my phone, what did I find but “breaking news” that TikTok has been selling personal data to the Chinese government.

But I think there’s a lot more than that going on.

“Another good one, sis!” I said aloud.

Then, I remembered my room number: 52. There are 52 cards in a deck. And just that evening, a confidant warned me, “there is always 1 Joker in every deck.”

“Thanks, Lion,” I said, amused.
